Seven Reasons ChatGPT Is Not Recommending Your Business (and the Fix for Each)
Ask ChatGPT who the best contractor in your town is and it names three businesses. If yours is not one of them, it is almost always one of these seven problems.
Try this right now. Open ChatGPT or Google and ask it, in plain words, the question a customer would ask: "Who is the best roofer in Jackson, Michigan?" or "Which dentist near Lansing takes new patients?" You will get two or three business names and a sentence about each.
If your business is not in that answer, you are losing customers you never knew were looking. The good news is that AI assistants are predictable. They skip businesses for a small number of reasons, and every one of them is fixable. Here are the seven we see most, in the order we usually find them.
1. Your facts do not match across the web
AI assistants cross-check. They read your website, your Google Business Profile, Yelp, Facebook, the Chamber listing, and whatever else mentions you. If your phone number is different on two of them, or your hours disagree, or your business name has "LLC" in one place and not another, the assistant loses confidence and names someone else.
The fix: pick one exact version of your name, address, phone, and hours. Make every listing match it, character for character. This is boring work and it is the single highest-return thing on this list.
2. Your website never says where you are
A surprising number of local sites never state their city in plain text. The address is in an image, or in the footer only, or the homepage says "serving the greater area." AI cannot recommend you for "near Jackson" if nothing on the page says Jackson.
The fix: say your city and the areas you serve in real text on the homepage, in the first screen, and on every service page. "Furnace repair in Jackson, MI and Jackson County" beats "Heating and cooling experts."
3. Your pages do not answer questions
AI assistants are answer engines. When someone asks "how much does a new roof cost in Michigan," the assistant looks for pages that answer that question and cites them. A page that says "Quality roofing. Call for a quote." gives it nothing to cite.
The fix: add a short FAQ to every service page with the real questions customers ask you on the phone, answered plainly. Ranges, timelines, what is included, what to expect. If you answer it in person every week, it belongs on the page.
4. Your site has no structured data
Structured data (also called schema markup) is a block of code that tells machines what the page is about: this is a local business, here is the address, these are the hours, these are the services, here are the reviews. AI crawlers lean on it heavily because it removes guesswork.
The fix: have your web designer add LocalBusiness, Service, and FAQPage schema to the site. Most sites built by DIY builders have none of it. Ask them to show you the code if you want to be sure.
5. You have reviews, but they do not say what you do
"Great service, highly recommend!" is a nice review and it tells an AI nothing. "They replaced our water heater the same day and cleaned up after" tells it your service, your speed, and your professionalism in one sentence. Assistants read review text to decide what you are good at.
The fix: when you ask for a review, ask the customer to mention what you did for them. Most people are happy to and just need the nudge.
6. There is nothing new on your site
A site that has not changed since 2021 looks abandoned to an assistant deciding who is still in business. It does not need a blog. It needs signs of life.
The fix: one short page or article a month. A project you finished, a question you get asked, a change in your services. Even updating the copyright year and your hours counts for something. The goal is a site that looks tended.
7. AI crawlers cannot read your site
Some sites load everything through scripts that AI crawlers do not run, or block crawlers outright in their robots file, or hide the main content behind a "click to enter" screen. The assistant sees a blank page and moves on.
The fix: ask your designer to confirm the site serves real text to crawlers and does not block them. Adding an llms.txt file, a plain-text summary of your business written for AI, is a small step that helps as well.
How to check your own business in five minutes
Ask ChatGPT, Gemini, and Google the three questions your customers would ask. Write down who gets named. Then open your Google Business Profile and your website side by side and compare name, phone, hours, and address. Most businesses find problem number one in the first two minutes.
If you would rather have someone do the whole check and fix what it turns up, that is what our AI search optimization service is for. We run these checks monthly and report, in plain language, who the assistants are naming and why.
Common questions
Why does ChatGPT not show my business?
Usually because your business facts are inconsistent across the web, your website never states your city in plain text, your pages do not answer real questions, or your site lacks structured data. Fix those four and most local businesses start getting named within a few months.
How do I get my business recommended by Google AI Overviews?
Google AI Overviews pull from pages that rank well and answer the question directly. Add plain-language FAQs to your service pages, keep your Google Business Profile complete and consistent with your site, and make sure your site has LocalBusiness and FAQPage schema markup.
Do reviews affect whether AI recommends a business?
Yes. AI assistants read review text, not just the star count. Reviews that mention the specific service you provided and how it went give the assistant evidence to recommend you for that service.
